Most of my early professional work was ethnographic, having received doctoral training in anthropology. I later began crafting stories with materials, sounds and light to express what is beyond language. I still work in relationship with people but mostly, nowadays, with plants and soils whose lessons are far worthier of our attention.

Urban Soils Institute

Urban Soils Institute

The Urban Soils Institute is a division of the New York City Soil and Water Conservation District. I worked with science staff to put field and lab projects in NYC cultural contexts and re-present the NYC Soil Survey (on-going) for wider application across industries and communities. I invited new scholars and artists to USI’s annual international soils symposium, simplified online soil testing requests in support of on-site and remote laboratory testing and remediation strategy services, designed and published the agency website and studied nuances of carbon blacks (on-going). Working from Jamaica Bay and Governors Island, I was initially brought on to co-design and co-teach soils workshops for the National Park Foundation’s Every Kid Outdoors initiative at Gateway National Recreation Area.
