Most of my early professional work was ethnographic, having received doctoral training in anthropology. I later began crafting stories with materials, sounds and light to express what is beyond language. I still work in relationship with people but mostly, nowadays, with plants and soils whose lessons are far worthier of our attention.

Broom Making

I’ve just returned from travels researching and gathering new items for the shop. One was a trip to The Long State to visit a farming and broom making family.

I’ll write a longer post about broom corn (a pretty interesting crop) but just wanted to get these neat thimble photos up. There’s a different strike point for the needle when sewing a broom together so these protective gloves were developed hundreds of years ago to get the job done and keep the jobber doing.
